The formal inauguration of Sree Krishna College in Guruvayur on 18th July 1964 marks a remarkable moment in the scenario of Higher Education in our state. Visualized by the Sree Krishna Educational Society, the College started functioning with a Pre-Degree Course affiliated with the University of Kerala. 1964 also witnessed the laying of the foundation stone for a permanent building at Ariyannur. In July 1967, the college was shifted to a well-accomplished and spacious building on the extensive campus at the permanent site at Ariyannur. With the inauguration of its Degree courses in Arts and Science affiliated with the University of Kerala, the college attained first-grade status. In 1976, the Sree Krishna Educational Society was dissolved and the Guruvayur Devaswom Educational Society was formally registered. Thereafter, Sree Krishna College came under the management of the Guruvayur Devaswom. More Degree courses and better infrastructural facilities enabled this institution to climb the academic ladder in quick, yet firm strides. In 1984, the college had its first P.G. Course in Botany. The year 1988 became a momentous year in the history of this institution with its Silver Jubilee celebrations being inaugurated by Sri. E.K. Nayanar, the then Honourable Chief Minister of Kerala. The foundation stone of the Silver Jubilee Auditorium was laid by the then Honourable Prime Minister Sri. Rajiv Gandhi. In 1990 the auditorium was inaugurated by the then Honourable Central Minister for Surface Transport Sri. K.P. Unnikrishnan. The College also takes pride in its innumerable extension activities that have proved to be of immense value to the community around. On Feb. 28, 2005 the college was accredited with a B++ by the NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Council), an autonomous institution of the University Grants Commission. The College was re - accredited by NAAC with ‘A’ Grade on November 27, 2017. The strength of the college comes to almost 1550 students. The Sree Krishna College aims at scaling great heights in academic excellence as well as responsible social commitment of its students. Its activities continue to focus on the concept that the campus is a microcosm of the society. The college was formally inaugurated by H.H. The Zamorin Raja of Calicut in the temporary shed put up near Sree Krishna High School at Guruvayur on 18th July 1964. The First Year Pre-Degree Class affiliated to the University of Kerala for I, II and III groups were started with Sri. N. Balakrishnan Nair, Retired Professor as Principal; A Managing Committee headed by Sree Rama Varma Appan Thampuran, the Retired D.P.I. Kerala State, was also constituted. The foundation stone for the main building of the College was laid by H.H. The Zamorin Raja and the construction of the permanent building was started at Ariyannur. In 1965, the second year Pre - Degree class was started. An additional science batch was started in the Pre - Degree class. Sri. N. Balakrishnan Nair, the first Principal ,resigned and Sri. P. Radhakrishna Menon was appointed as the Principal of the College. The Sree Krishna Educational Society with 14 members (5 ex officio) was duly constituted and requested to manage the college. The foundation stones of 2 Hostel Blocks in the new campus were laid by Sri. N.E.S. Raghavachari, Advisor, Kerala State and Sri. M. Bakthavalsalam., the Chief Minister of Madras. In 1966, the N.C.C. Unit of the College was formed. Furthermore, in 1967, the College was shifted to a spacious and imposing buildings on the extensive campus at the permanent site at Ariyannur in July. The construction of the Main building, three hostel blocks and a canteen was completed in August 1967. The College was raised to first grade status and Degree courses affiliated to the Kerala University were started in Arts (Economics, English and Sanskrit) and Science (Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry).

The Commerce group, a sixth batch in Pre-Degree was also started. During 1968, Sri. P. Radhakrishna Menon, Principal, resigned from his post and Sri. M.P. Balakrishna Menon, Professor of English, took charge in June, with the formation of the Calicut University. The boys’ hostel started functioning in the permanent buildings. The chairmanship of the managing committee was taken up by Sri. C. Sankaran Nair, Commissioner, HR & CE on the resignation of Sri. Ramavarma Appan Thampuran. The student strength of the college exceeded 1000 during the year. The Degree courses in Botany and Zoology started in September 1969. On the expiry of the term of Sree Krishna Educational Society in March, Sri. D.H. Namboodiripad was nominated as Chairman and the Society was reconstituted. Sri. K.S. Rama Iyer, retired Professor, took charge as Principal.Sri. K.S. Rama Iyer, Principal, resigned in January1970 and Sri. K. Kesavan Nair, retired Principal - in - charge of Government College Chittur, took charge as Principal in April. The Guruvayur Devaswom came under the direct control of the new Managing Committee constituted by the Government and the S.K.E.S. was reconstituted with Sri. M.P. Muthedath as Chairman in the year 1971. Sri. K.C. Maron Raja H.H. the Zamorin Raja of Calicut became the Chairman of the Sree Krishna Education Society in 1972. The management of the college accepted the condition laid down by the Government for implementing the system of direct payment of salaries to the staff of private colleges. In 1973, a new block of 5 rooms was constructed on the western side to provide additional accommodation for classes. The B.Com Degree course was started in 1974. In 1975,Sri. K. Kesavan Nair became the Principal & Correspondent of the college and he got retired in the same year. In 1976, Sri. M.P. Balakrishna Menon, Prof. of English was appointed as the Principal - in - charge. The Sree Krishna Educational Society was dissolved. The Guruvayur Devaswom Educational Society was registered under General Act XXI of 1960 as S. N. 76 of 1976 on 21- 03-76. In 1978, Sri. M.P. Balakrishna Menon resigned from the post of Principal and Sri. N. Sundaram, Prof.of Economics, took charge as the Principal. Prof. M. Prabhakaran assumed charge as Principal.The B.A. History course was started in 1979. In 1980, the shift system was introduced for the Pre-Degree Course. In 1981, B.A. Malayalam Course started. An additional batch in Pre-Degree group III also sanctioned. The College came under the direct Management of the Guruvayur Devaswom. In 1984, M.Sc. (Botany) was started. In 1986, Prof. M. Prabhakaran, Principal, retired from service in March a n d Prof. M. Krishnanunny Menon, Head of the Dept. of Botany, was promoted as Principal. In 1987, Hon’ble Prime Minister Sri. Rajiv Gandhi laid the foundation stone for Silver Jubilee Auditorium on 17th December. In 1988, the Hon’ble Chief Minister Sri. E.K. Nayanar inaugurated the Silver Jubilee celebration on 15th August. In 1990, the Silver Jubilee Auditorium was inaugurated on 17th September by Hon’ble Minister for Surface Transport Sri. K.P. Unnikrishnan. The inauguration of the 400 meter athletic track was done by Sri. V.V. Raghavan, Hon’ble Minister for Agriculture on 1 December. In the year 1993, Prof. M. Krishnanunni Menon, Principal, retired from service on 30thJune and Dr. P. Sankaranarayanan, Dept. of Malayalam was appointed as Principal of the college. The Shift system was discontinued in 1994. In the year 1995,M.Sc. (Physics) got started. In 1998, B.A.(Functional English) and B.Sc. (Biochemistry) were started The B.A.Functional English Programme was started with the financial aid of the University Grants Commission. In 2003, it became a self - financing course. In 1999, the Department of Botany started a Botanical garden with glass house, and Green house. In the year 2000, M.Com (with foreign Trade Management) was started. In the year 2001, M.A. Malayalam Language and Literature Course was started. In the year 2002,Pre Degree Course was delinked. When Dr. P. Sankaranarayanan retired from service, Smt.M. Krishnakumari was appointed as Principal in charge. In 2003, Sri.Raveendranath K., Dept. of Commerce was appointed as Principal on 21- 3-03. In the year 2005, the College was nationally accredited at B++ Level by NAAC for a period of 5 years. In 2007, the UGC sanctioned Rs. One Crore to construct the Ladies Hostel in the College campus. In 2009 , M.Com, M.A. Malayalam, and B.Sc Bio-Chemistry courses were granted aided status. In 2011,Oct. Dept of Botany was upgraded to Research Centre. In 2011, Sri. Raveendranath.K was appointed as Pro Vice-Chancellor of Calicut University. In the same year, Sri. G. Jayakrishnan, Head of the Department of Botany was appointed as Principal in charge. In 2012, Dr. Damodaran Head of the Department of Commerce took over as Principal in charge. In 2012, Sri. D.Jayaprasad was appointed as Principal on 27-12-2012. In 2013, MA course in Sanskrit started. In 2015, the construction of the building of Ladies Hostel was completed. In 2015, the Dept. of Physics was upgraded to Research Centre. In 2015, the Ladies hostel building was inaugurated on 03.10.2015 by the then Hon’ble Home Minister of Kerala, Sri.Ramesh Chennithala. In 2015,Multi - Gym was inaugurated in the Department of Physical Education. In 2017, the College canteen got re-opened. In 2017, the College was re-accredited at the national level with an ‘A’ Grade by the NAAC for a period of 5 years. In 2020, Dr. M.R. Lovely was appointed as the Principal of the college. In 2021 Dr. P.S. Vijoy was appointed Principal in Charge of the College. In 2021, MA Business Economics Course got started. In 2022, Dr. M.K. Harinarayanan was appointed the Principal in charge of the college from 1-7-2022 onwards. Presently, Dr. P. S. Vijoy is the Principal in charge of the college.
