Phytochemistry and Pharmacognosy Lab
The P.G. and Research Department of Botany has established a Phytochemistry lab in 2023. The lab focuses mainly on extraction and isolation of plant derived compounds. The major activities are plant material preparation to ensure that they are preserved in proper condition for analysis. The lab has solvent extractionmethods like cold percolation, hot extraction and soxhlet extraction to isolate the chemical constituents of the plants. Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) and Column Chromatography (CC) techniques are also employed in the lab to separate and analyse the phytocompounds. The lab also houses a single distillation unit to meet the distilled water requirements. An UV chamber is also equipped in the lab to view and analyze substances that are invisible under normal light by exposing them to ultraviolet (UV) light, mostly to visualize separated components on a thin layer chromatography (TLC) plate. The lab also facilitates the requirements of Pharmacognostic studies like, anatomical observations and powder analysis to determine and standardize the quality of crude drugs from plant sources.
