Myself, Amritha M. S. is a researcher and educator in the field of Botany with academic and research interests spanning plant physiology, abiotic stress biology, nanobiotechnology, and sustainable agriculture. I completed my B.Sc. in Botany from St. Mary's College, (Autonomous), Thrissur, and my M.Sc. in Botany from St. Thomas College (Autonomous), Thrissur, where I developed a strong foundation in plant taxonomy and physiology studies. Following my postgraduate studies, I worked at the Jawaharlal Nehru Tropical Botanic Garden and Research Institute (JNTBGRI), Palode, under the Foundation for Revitalisation of Local Health Traditions (FRLHT) medicinal plant conservation program under the guidance of Dr. Sam P. Mathew. There, I had an opportunity to work in the conservation, characterization, and documentation of medicinal plant germplasm from the Western Ghats, one of the world's biodiversity hotspots.
I also served as Assistant Professor (Contract) at St. Mary's College, Thrissur, while continuing my pursuit of research as well as academics. Having qualified for the CSIR-UGC JRF-NET with an All India Rank of 71, along with UGC-NET and GATE, I joined the Department of Botany, University of Calicut, as a doctoral research scholar under the guidance of Prof. Jos T. Puthur and Dr. Kishore Sridharan. My doctoral research focuses on the application of graphitic carbon nitride-based nanomaterials as seed priming agents to enhance drought and salinity tolerance in rice. The work integrates plant physiology, molecular biology, and nanotechnology to develop sustainable approaches for improving crop resilience under changing climatic conditions. In recognition of our research and its potential, I was awarded the prestigious Fulbright-Kalam Climate Doctoral Research Fellowship and spent a year at the Stockbridge School of Agriculture, University of Massachusetts Amherst, USA, working under the mentorship of Prof. Om Parkash Dhankher. My research contributions have resulted in publications in reputed international journals, including the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry (Impact Factor: 6.1), Plant Nano Biology (Impact Factor: 7.7), International Journal of Molecular Sciences (Impact Factor: 4.9), and Physiology and Molecular Biology of Plants. My scholarly output also includes book chapters published by CRC Press and Apple Academic Press, presentations at national and international conferences in India and abroad, and a U.S. provisional patent application on nanomaterial-assisted seed priming technologies. In 2025, I was selected to present under the prestigious Young Scientist Competition category in Plant Physiology at the International Conference on Plant Physiology (ICPP 2025), organized by the Indian Society for Plant Physiology (ISPP), where I had the opportunity to showcase our research findings at TNAU, Coimbatore, India.
My aspiration is to become an academician who can inspire and mentor future generations of plant scientists while pursuing interdisciplinary research in plant science. Through my research, I aim to contribute to climate-resilient agriculture, crop improvement, and sustainable plant-based solutions that address pressing global environmental challenges.
