WORLD WETLAND DAY 2025

The P G and Research department of Botany jointly with the nature club “Bhoomika” of Sree Krishna college, Guruvayur, has observed World Wetland Day on 2nd February 2025. The theme of the current year being “Protecting wetlands for common future” a team of 5 selected nature club members of B.Sc Botany along with the faculty member Ms Varna P. S. have conducted a visit to “ Naalumanikatt” which is a recreational hub for nature lovers and similar enthusiasts along the estuarine belts of Chavakkad region near Guruvayur. The area has been attracting public to a fragile ecosystem of mangroves and thus can pose a possible threat to the ecosystem if left unattended. The team also collected and identified two species of mangroves and various mangrove associates which was documented in connection with the final year B Sc project work. A thorough analysis of the extend of pollution due to lack of proper hygiene measures and surveillance was carried out. The team has discussed with the owners of the property regarding the importance of conserving mangroves and wetlands in large and their significant role in ecosystem diversity
