HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT

Sree Krishna College, Guruvayoor was founded in July 1964. The College is affiliated to the University of Calicut.  The college started with only 3 divisions and 5 batches in Pre-Degree for I, II & III groups.  In 1967, the college entered the field of commerce education by starting the commerce group, as 6th batch, in Pre Degree. The lone member of the faculty then was Dr.K.C Vijayakumar.  Prof P.K Narayanan joined the Department in 1968.  In 1970, Prof K. Kesavan Nair Retired Principal- in- Charge of Govt College, Chittoor, took charge as the Principal of the College.  He was the Dean, Faculty of Commerce, University of Calicut.  Dr. K.C Vijayakumar left the department in 1972 when he got appointment in the Department of Commerce and Management Studies, Calicut University Campus. 

Prof K. Kesavan Nair took keen interest in spreading, commerce education.  The need to start B.Com. degree course in the college was felt by one and all because students, after their Pre- Degree in Commerce from this college, were to go Thrissur for their B.Com. at that time.  The efforts of Prof. Kesavan Nair and his team culminated in 1974, with the starting of the B.Com. Degree Course in our College. 

Prof. P. Shobhana joined the Department in 1974 followed by Prof. T. Kunhianandan in 1975.  Prof. K. Kesavan Nair retired from service in 1975.  In 1976, two more appointments were made in the department. Thus, Prof. V. Muralidharan and Prof P. Ramadas joined the department, upsurge the member of commerce faculty to five.  Besides, the services of Adv. N.K. Sreedharan, Part time Lecturer in Law were also made available to the students. By that time, the college had become a full-fledged institution capable of providing Commerce Education in the nearby areas.

In 1979, Shift System was introduced in our college.  As part this, an additional Pre- Degree batch in Commerce was started.  Sri K. Raveendranath joined the department in 1980 followed by Sri P.A Damodharan in 1981. Dr P. Mohanan joined the department in 1985 and Sri P. Gopinathan joined in 1986. Prof V. Muralidharan left the department in 1986 upon his qualifying AICWAI final and getting the post of a Corporate Executive. Shri P. Mohanan left the department in 1991, when he got appointed in the Department of Commerce & Management Studies, Calicut University Campus.  The M.Com. course with specialisation in Foreign Trade was stated in the year 1999.Thus, the college acquired a permanent seat in the field of Higher Education in Commerce. Prof. P.K. Narayanan and Prof. P. Shobhana retired from service in 2000 followed by Prof. P. Kunhiananadan in 2001. Sri.K.Raveendranathan became the principal of the college in 2003. He continued in that office till 2011.The Department of Commerce is very much proud that Prof. K. Raveendranathan has been appointed as the Pro Vice-chancellor of University of Calicut in 2011. He has contributed a lot to the administrative activities of the University of Calicut and place it in the list of the most successful eminent centres of the excellence of higher education in South India. Our department has been again honoured when Dr. P. Mohanan, erstwhile faculty of this department took charge as Pro-Vice Chancellor of University of Calicut succeeding Prof. K. Raveendranathan. From 2001 onwards, the Department of Commerce was headed by Prof.  P. Ramadasan who retired from the service in 2008 and Dr. P. A. Damodaran has become the Head of the Department of Commerce. During 2013, the fresh appointment has been made and five new Assistant Professors, Ms. Jisha S Kumar, Ms. Dhanya K.S., Ms. Divya Rani R. L., Ms. Nisha P. S. and Ms. Jisha P. S. joined the Department. Dr. P.A. Damodaran retired from the service in the year 2015. Since 2015, Dr. P. Gopinathan Associate Professor became the Head of the Department till his retirement on 2017. From the year 2017 onwards Dr. Jisha S. Kumar is the Head of the Department of Commerce. In order to fill the retirement vacancies, three new appointments were made during 2019 and Dr. Prajisha K., Dr, Subhish Kanakachandran C.R. joined the Department. Dr. Subhish M. left the Department and re-joined Higher Secondary Service in the year 2020 July.
