The B.A. degree course in English was started in 1967 when the college was shifted to the present campus at Ariyannur. At its inception, the B.A. English course was affiliated to the University of Kerala. Later, in 1968, it was affiliated to the University of Calicut when that institution was formed.
We follow the Four Year Under Graduate Programme of the University of Calicut from June 2024 onwards. The courses offered by the Department of English are BA English Honours and BA English Honours with Research with Minor Programmes and other Foundational Courses. The highlight of the BA English Honours with Research is that the students can directly enter into the research field after their graduation.
Programme Outcome
Our aim at the Department of English is to widen the students’ horizons and thereby enhance their empathy as well as to promote their critical and creative thinking which facilitates their development as individuals who contribute to society and the world.
With this aim before us we have set the following objectives, namely
(1) To help our students to use English effectively for study purposes across the curriculum as well as for real life purposes.
(2) To encourage students to think on their own, share interpretations and develop a tolerance of different cultures.
In addition to their objectives, the learning outcomes set for the B.A. English students include the honing of their English language skill, so that they can communicate appropriately and effectively and thus become employable. It is also expected that they will be able to read literature with proper understanding and appreciation and reflect on texts from different perspectives.
