The Department of History was established in 1964, the same year the college was founded. Prof. AK Premajam was the Head of the Department, and Prof. Manikkavasagan Pillai and Prof. P P Narayanan Namboothiri were members of the teaching staff. The B.A. Degree course in History started in 1979. Over time, there was a gradual increase in both the number of teaching staff and students. Prof. VP Balakrishnan, Prof. K Parameswaran Namboothiri, Prof. TM Sajitha Rajan, Smt. K Kumari, and Sri TB Ajayan served as lecturers in the department. In 2002, Sri K. Lakhmanan became the Head of the Department. In addition to the HOD, three more teachers, Smt. KS Geetha, Sri N. Rajasekharan Nair, and Smt. R Jayasree (Political Science), served the department.

The department of History is dedicated to the exploration and study of  past human socities and cultures.The course covering ancient civilizations,political histories, social movements and world wars.Seminars,invited talks,field trips are organized to enhance learning beyond the classroom.Various clubs under the department organize activities like quiz,debates and historical discussions,and offering a platform for students to share their interest in History.The department museum promotes an awareness in culture and heritage of India.
