Established on July 18, 1964, the Department of Malayalam at Sree Krishna College, Guruvayur, has a distinguished history of fostering excellence in the study and research of the Malayalam language and literature. The department's journey began with Sri. Kummini Vasudevan Namboothiri, who joined as the first Head of the Department and Lecturer on September 1, 1964.In 1981, the department introduced the B.A. Degree course in Malayalam, marking a significant milestone in its academic offerings. The pursuit of higher education was furthered in 2001 with the initiation of a Postgraduate Semester course in Malayalam with a specialization in Journalism, which initially had 12 seats. Presently, the department offers an M.A. in Malayalam Language and Literature, reflecting its commitment to advanced academic and research pursuits.Over the years, the department has produced a notable number of graduates and postgraduates who have excelled in various fields, both nationally and internationally. Our alumni network is robust and active, with members contributing significantly across diverse professions and sectors around the globe.In 2024, the department established the Centre for Language Documentation and Preservation. This centre focuses on the documentation and preservation of tribal languages and dialects, underlining the department's dedication to the conservation of linguistic heritage.The Department of Malayalam is deeply engaged in research related to both language and literature. With a strong emphasis on scholarly inquiry and analysis, the department is actively working towards becoming a recognized research centre, aiming to further advance the field of Malayalam studies and contribute to academic knowledge on a broader scale.
