Vaikom Muhammad Basheer Anusmaranam

The Malayalam Department held the programme ‘Vaikom Muhammad Basheer Anusmaranam’ on July 5, 2019, in the Mini Auditorium at 2 p.m. The event was inaugurated with a welcome speech by Dr. A.M. Reena, Head of the Malayalam Department. College Principal Prof. D. Jayaprasad chaired the function, while felicitation was provided by Dr. K. Sankaranunni (former Head of the Malayalam Department) and A.V. Rajesh (College Union Chairman). 

The Chief Guest, Dr. Anil K.M., Director of Thunchathu Ezhuthachan Malayalam Sarvakalasala, Tirur, presented an insightful talk about Vaikom Muhammad Basheer. Dr. Anil highlighted Basheer’s contributions as an Indian independence activist and a prominent Malayalam writer known for his distinct, down-to-earth writing style. Basheer's notable works include *Balyakalasakhi*, *Sabdhanagal*, *Pathummayude Aadu*, *Mathilukal*, *Ntuppuppakkoranendarnnu*, and *Janmadinam*. 

Dr. Anil discussed Basheer’s unique portrayal of marginalized characters such as gamblers, thieves, pickpockets, and prostitutes, emphasizing his ability to blend humor and pathos in his writing. Themes of love, hunger, poverty, and life in prison were recurrent in Basheer’s works. 

The vote of thanks was delivered by Devaprabha, Secretary of the Malayalam Association. The programme saw enthusiastic participation from many students.
