Greetings and a warm welcome to the Department of Botany!

The PG & Research Department of Botany, Sree Krishna College, Guruvayur, is one of the oldest departments in the college. With a legacy spanning more than 50 years, we have been nurturing generations of students through various domains of plant biology and its allied branches since our inception. The department was initially established to offer B.Sc. Botany degree course during 1969-70 academic year. Later in 1984, we were elevated as a Post graduate department in Botany and in 2011, we were recognised as the first research centre in Botany in Thrissur district, affiliated to the University of Calicut. The department has successfully produced several university rank holders and a good number of students have qualified competitive examinations like UGC-JRF and GATE. Till date, about 6 research scholars have selected this department to pursue their research and 4 of them has already been awarded with Ph. D. degree.

The Department has functioned efficiently in the University and State level activities for various aspects of academics, biodiversity studies and plant systematics. The expertise offered was in areas like Mycology, Plant physiology, Plant Molecular biology, Cancer Biology, Angiosperm taxonomy and Ecological studies. The specializations offered during various time periods were, Plant Biotechnology, Angiosperm taxonomy, Conservation Biology and Crop genetics and improvement. We have a well-established tissue culture lab with sufficient instrumentations, separate laboratories for Biochemistry, Phytochemistry and Plant Physiology, a classified herbarium of curated angiosperm specimens arranged according to the Bentham & Hooker’s system of classification, a museum of dried and wet preserved specimens belonging to various plant groups and a reference library of over 2500 books.

We believe in co-evolving with the young generation of today, but only with a deep sense of social responsibility of our institution. Students are mentored and a cordial relation is maintained to ensure their whole-hearted contribution to the process of learning. Scientific reasoning and aptitude are always highlighted in all the ventures of the department and students are encouraged to grab more opportunities apart from their curricular interest. Our aim is to raise ourselves as a resourceful centre for a student to pursue their studies in Botany and enable them to confidently conquer further accolades in their career.
