The Ulmaceae are distinctive in being trees with simple, often distichous, serrate, oblique leaves, the secondary veins terminating at teeth, the flowers small, unisexual or bisexual, wind-pollinated, the ovary superior, 2–3-loculed with 1 pendulous ovule per locule, the fruit dry, often a fl attened samara.
