Large family of flowering plants (order Alismatales) comprising more than 4,000 species in over 140 genera. The family includes many climbers and herbaceous plants as well as rooted or free-floating aquatics. Members of the family are characterized by an unusual inflorescence. The minute flowers are bisexual or unisexual.
